What the Quest for Tactile Maps Can Teach Us about Making Interactive Maps
نویسنده
چکیده
For those people who are visually impaired or blind there are tactile maps that can be read by touch. Like in visual maps, the tactual entities representing geographical features have to be carefully selected and placed on the map with respect to technical and sensory considerations, i.e. abstraction. A schematic map is abstracted beyond technical needs. It can support map-readers to better grasp the essential spatial concepts represented in the schematic map. This short paper first collects the constraints for constructing schematic tactile orientation maps that can be easily understood and used. It discusses how the knowledge about schematization principles found for tactile orientation maps and the lessons learned during the quest for those maps can benefit the construction of visual interactive maps. The aim of the transfer is that (certain types of) visual maps can be abstracted in novel ways such that the whole map then would be easier to understand. Keywords— spatial cognition, tactile map, interactive map, schematization

In the first article Anke Brock and Christophe Jouffrais give an overview of their research on making geographic maps accessible to visually impaired users. They developed an accessible interactive map prototype composed of a raised-line overlay, an interactive tabletop, and speech output. Their work is currently being used in some classrooms in France for teaching geography to visually impaire...

Pattern recognition on seismic data is a useful technique for generating seismic facies maps that capture changes in the geological depositional setting. Seismic facies analysis can be performed using the supervised and unsupervised pattern recognition methods. Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we compared and evaluated the capability of two unsuperv...
متن کاملFrom Open Geographical Data to Tangible Maps: Improving the Accessibility of Maps for Visually Impaired People
Visual maps must be transcribed into (interactive) raised-line maps to be accessible for visually impaired people. However, these tactile maps suffer from several shortcomings: they are long and expensive to produce, they cannot display a large amount of information, and they are not dynamically modifiable. A number of methods have been developed to automate the production of raised-line maps, ...
متن کاملConstructing the Yellow Brick Road: Route Bricks on Virtual Tactile Maps
Tactile maps are the standard media to convey geographical information to blind people. An approach for an interactive substitute for tactile maps is presented, called virtual tactile maps. It is based on an image processing system tracking fingers and game piece-like objects. Output is done through speech and sound. Users learn routes by constructing them with route bricks.
متن کاملInteractivity Improves Usability of Geographic Maps for Visually Impaired People
Tactile relief maps are used by visually impaired people to acquire mental representation of space, but they retain important limitations (limited amount of information, braille text, etc.). Interactive maps may overcome these limitations. However, usability of these two types of maps had never been compared. It is then unknown whether interactive maps are equivalent or even better solutions th...
